" DEATH OF PERFECTION "SCUTARI FILM PRODUCTIONDeath of Perfection is a powerful film based on an emotional monologue regarding the role of mistakes in our self-education. After establishing a tonic base, the final piece was polished through cooperative interaction with the film’s creators, Scutari Film Production. The concept of the film was strong, so the thematic ideas of the music were already present. This piece was completely written around the monologue, and the actual film was recorded in tandem with the composition process. The evolution of the piece was fun to trace, and the final piece is miles from the starting point. The transitions between sections coupled with interesting harmonies and resolutions create a unique effect in which the tension of the monologue is captured musically.

" THE HARPIST "PENTATONIC PRODUCTION LLCThe score for The Harpist was written while Caleb was still in school at Boston College. A classic storyline made the music an essential component of the story’s context. Set in the steamy world of the blues nightclub scene, a hapless musician sells his soul to the devil in order to become the best blues harmonica player the world has ever seen. Many instruments and players had to be brought in to complete this score. There were many individual pieces in this short film, each used to create a different texture for specific scenes. From chase scenes to live music, the score was an absolutely essential keystone of this award-winning film. Composer Erik Olson also had a major role in both the composition and recording of the audio for this film. At the end of the day, this film allowed us to really stretch out our legs and return to our blues-guitar roots. The variety of the final product creates a convincing atmosphere for this sultry film.

" THE LIER "BOSTON FILM RACE 2010This was a fun project. The concept is this: teams of filmmakers have twenty-four hours to create an original film from nothing. At 8:00 P.M., all of the teams meet to establish the criteria of the film, and from there, they’re off! In order to be sure that all of the films were created within the constraints of a twenty-four hour period, certain thematic criteria must be included, as well as specific physical objects. These criteria are announced at the meeting. This led to an extremely spontaneous award-winning film and score. In this case, the score was written as the script was being written. Time was very tight, so we borrowed a traditional Irish melody and recorded everything on-location. The portability of our studio setup is what allowed us to make this score happen. Many analog instruments were used live, as well as a handful of digital instruments. The final mix is a lively, original arrangement, which certainly had a hand in the film’s total conquest of the Boston Film Race.

" THIRTY-TWO BY NINE & PENDANT "PENTATONIC PRODUCTION LLCThis film has the distinction of being the most unique piece of art we’ve ever been involved in. The film’s concept is quite interesting – basically, the film was shot as two separate mini-films which provide necessary context to each other only at the end, when both films are displayed side-by-side. This revolutionary concept opened the door for an expansively expressive score. A single, minimalist composition plays through the entire piece, and sections are added as the film progresses. The viewer is left with an effective emotional context which never fails to captivate the viewer. Working on this film was quite technical, as the timing of certain climactic musical events were hugely important for the continuity of the film. Credit is due to Pentatonic Productions for such a creative idea. We were excited to work on such a groundbreaking film, and the final product is nothing short of enthralling.

A film’s score is one of its most powerful weapons in terms of emotional effectiveness. After all, what would a film be without a score? A score solidifies mood, tone, and pace, and can be used as a strong thematic device. For us, scoring a film or composing a piece of music to stand alone is a detailed process which can include heavy feedback from the creators of the film.Personally, we love to score films. We take the process very seriously and use every musical and audio tool in our arsenal to create the most effective score possible. With a full complement of orchestral instruments as well as synthesizers and atmospheric instruments at our disposal, the possibilities are quite limitless. We love to work alongside filmmakers as they develop their films in order to create the most integrated and organic viewing experience possible.
